repairing the front storage box on a pop up camper. And also a small tear in the vinal at the corner where it stretches over the bed corner. Any suggetions.

Don't know about the storage box, but to mend the corners you need a hooked sewing needle, heavy duty, try a camping supply store, they will know what you need, also might be able to find one at places that sell pop up campers. This should work if the tear in in the seam. Otherwise you will have to patch the tear.

i.e., summer storms, or small (catagory 1) hurricanes.

I have stayed in my pop ups in all kinds of weather. I've been in rain, thunder and snow storms. They hold up well if you use common sense. Do not touch the canvas in the rain, it will start a leak.
They are a great way to camp.

I have an 8-year-old pop-up camper and the seams are beginning to come loose. Is trying to sew them the only way of mending them?

If it's a small spot, I'd find a heavy duty needle and nylon thread, and repair it myself. You may need a sailmaker's palm to push the needle through, or you might be able to work with a pair of needlenose pliers, and a helper on the other side. See the links below to see what the sailmaker's palms look like. After you make the repair, get a bottle of seam sealer from a camping supply store, and use that sparingly on the seams to waterproof them. Try a bit on an inconspicuous spot first - it may discolor the fabric.

If it's a large spot, or the canvas top is torn or badly worn, find a canvas and awning repair shop on your area, or if you're near water, a sailmaking and repair shop. They are equipped to handle large pieces like this. I burned a hole in the top of my pop-up once, and they were able to replace the entire panel for less than what it would have cost to take it to the dealership. I had to remove and replace the top myself, but it wasn't too hard - just awkward, because of the size and weight of the assembled top. If you do remove it yourself, take lots of pictures and notes about how it sits on the camper now. If you have any questions about how to put it back, these will be invaluable.

VW pop-tops come in a huge variety of configurations as VW Camper conversions were carried out by a wide range of companies. You’ve probably heard some of the names – Westfalia (‘Westies’) in Germany, Devon (based in Sidmouth UK), Holdsworth, Viking, Palomino, Canterbury and Dormobile.

The picture shows a classic 70’s Devon Moonraker with a bellows pop up camper top in very 70’s colours.

Danbury is still doing conversions, both of new VW Campers built in Brazil and also of other vans. In addition there are a few specialist companies who will add a pop-top to your tin top VW Camper.

Added to the range of conversion companies is the range of models which each company produced and the range of popup variations – front hinge, rear hinge, variants of side hinge with different types of bellows, and pop tops that elevate parallel to the roof. Even these have a range of variants - from straight pop-up to curious boat shapes.

This blog aims to help demystify all this and find VW camper parts and suppliers to help you enjoy your pop up camper trouble-free.
